In the AMA citation style, references are organized in the order they appear in the text, and not alphabetically. When you begin your paper, the first source you quote or cite should be marked with a superscript 1. In the corresponding reference list at the end of the paper, the full citation for the reference you're quoting or citing should appear first in the list, with a corresponding number 1. The second citation is marked with a superscript 2, and so on.
