The best place to find the NLM abbreviations for journals (which is what AMA uses) is to search for the journal in PubMed. You can do so by following these steps:

  1. Go to PubMed
  2. Under the Explore section, click on Journals
  3. Enter in your journal name in the search
  4. You'll see the NLM Title Abbreviation (see attached screenshot)

There may be times where you cannot find a journal listed in PubMed. If that is the case, you can find further guidance in the AMA Manual, Chapter 13.10. Here they have abbreviations for common words that would be in a journal title so you can kind of "make up" your own. You can get to the AMA Manual by following these steps:

  1. Go to the Boxer Library website
  2. Under Popular Resources on the right side of the screen click More
  3. Click on AMA Manual of Style (it will be near the top as the list is alphabetical)
